The academic, social, emotional and physical wellbeing of our students is paramount. Our pastoral care program aims to support students through their teenage years so that as they develop they have the ability to make informed choices and acquire life skills to enable them to lead happy, healthy and successful lives.
Assistant Principal
The Assistant Principal has overall responsibility for the wellbeing of students in the high school. He/she works with a team of dedicated staff including Heads of Year, Student Service Coordinator, Personal Counsellor, Health teacher and Advisors. The school nurses and the Designated Safeguarding Lead also give advice and support.
Heads of Year
Each grade has a Head of Year who is a key member of the pastoral care team responsible for the wellbeing of students in that grade. They are teachers who also work with students, parents and other teachers on a day-to-day basis to problem-solve and support, to encourage and celebrate success and to ensure no student in our care goes unnoticed.
Heads of Year schedule regular wellbeing meetings. Teachers and advisors of a particular grade give feedback about each student’s progress and development. They also help develop and present the wellbeing curriculum.
Student Support Coordinator
The Student Support Coordinator gathers and collates information from teachers/advisors about students causing concern The information is shared with the Student Support Team (SST) which develops plans to address the concerns and monitors progress. SST members include: Heads of Year, Student Support Coordinator, Personal Counsellors, Academic Deans, learning support teachers, Assistant Principal.
Advisors
Students meet with their Advisor every day. They are the first point of contact for students. Advisors work with other members of the pastoral care team to provide advice and support for their advisees. The Advisor is the first person students should turn to when they are worried or concerned about academic or non-academic matters.
Personal Counsellors
The Personal Counsellors ( one for Grade 9 to 10 and one for Grade 11 to 12) provide help with students’ personal problems or transition issues. If a student is in emotional distress, a Personal Counsellor meets with them on an ‘as-needed’ basis and can help parents and students find longer term support services outside school. The counsellors also coordinate the orientation process for new students and contribute to the development of the wellbeing curriculum.
Health Teacher
The Health Teacher runs health classes for students in grades 9 and 10 and presentations and information sharing for older students. The health curriculum covers such topics as sex and relationships, self-image, keeping safe, drug and alcohol use and abuse, tolerance etc..
